PHOENIX, AZ – July 25, 2024 – Navajo Housing Authority (NHA) employees and their families convened at the Arizona Grand Resort from Tuesday, July 23rd through Friday, July 26th, for the NHA annual meeting. The meeting hosted a series of informative sessions, safety demonstrations, and community-building activities. This year’s event aimed to rejuvenate, educate, and celebrate the dedicated staff who tirelessly work to improve housing conditions for the Navajo Nation.

NHA Chief Executive Officer Heather Duncan-Etsitty opened the meeting with a powerful address highlighting the significant challenges and achievements of the past year. She emphasized the critical need for improved infrastructure and services on the Navajo Nation, from access to clean water to local financial institutions and grocery stores.

"As of 2018, up to 35% of [Navajo] homes lack adequate water,” said Duncan-Etsitty. “The Navajo Nation alone accounts for over 80% of American Indian homeowners living in crowded homes without complete plumbing. These conditions are unacceptable, and we must address them urgently.”

Duncan-Etsitty also celebrated the timely submission of their 2025 Indian Housing Plan (IHP) and the successful completion of new housing units in various communities.

"For the first time in years, we submitted our housing plan ahead of the HUD deadline, a testament to the hard work of our finance team and all departments involved. We have also reorganized our strategic plan, secured new laptops for our staff, and improved our field visits and training programs."

Terrilynn Cook, Chief Administrative Officer, praised the administrative support staff, HR team, IT department, and procurement specialists for their relentless dedication and hard work.

"I want to start by recognizing our administrative support staff,” said Cook. “They work tirelessly every day to keep us organized and ensure we have the resources needed to do our jobs. Despite being short-staffed, these individuals have taken on additional responsibilities and supported other departments."

At an employee service awards banquet dinner, NHA celebrated 29 employees for their dedication and long-standing service to improving housing conditions on the Navajo Nation. Recognized for 30 years of service were Sharon A. Begay, Earl D. Tully, and Mary Vandever. Virginia Norton was honored for 35 years, and Phyllicsita Gilmore was lauded for her extraordinary 45 years of commitment.

Employees expressed their gratitude for the event, noting the valuable information gained from the sessions and the opportunity to engage with colleagues from various departments. Olivia Tsosie, Administrative Specialist, and Doris Yonnie, Procurement Specialist, were instrumental in organizing the event. They secured the location, facilitated contracts, procured educational items, and managed logistics to ensure a smooth and successful gathering.

“We've received a lot of positive feedback,” said Tsosie. “Employees appreciate the educational materials and the chance to bring their families. It’s rewarding to see everyone so happy and engaged.”

As the NHA moves forward, the focus remains on innovation, efficiency, and community engagement. The leadership team is dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by the Navajo Nation and ensuring that every employee feels valued and supported.
